Academic Programs

Undergraduate degree (B.S.) in Spatial Sciences

Texas A&M, through the Department of Forestry Science (Spatial Science Laboratory) and the Department of Geography, offers a degree in spatial sciences that combines a solid background in spatial science and environmental studies. This degree provides students with an advanced knowledge of the spatial sciences, experience in interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images, as well as a broad understanding of computer applications and database management. Through core coursework in spatial sciences and supporting courses students will learn to utilize the full potential of the spatial sciences in real-world problem solving. From real-time wildfire risk assessment, to crime analysis, the spatial sciences are fast becoming an integral part of modern resource management.

Research opportunities include a variety of topics such as GIS/RS data development, natural resources assessment, forestry inventory, forest biometrics, forest fire risk management and fuels mapping, urban and rural interface issues, flood modeling and damage assessment, environmental, weather, and water quantity and quality modeling.

Continuing Education & Non-credit Workshops

Spatial Sciences Laboratory

Offers workshops on the following topics: Geographic Information Systems, Introductory Global Positioning Systems, Introductory Remote Sensing, Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT). Workshops are held at the Spatial Sciences laboratory at Texas A&M University. The lab is located in the Centeq Building in Research Park. Continuing Education Units (CEU) are available.

Land Information Systems

Land Information Systems lab (LIS) is a facility of the Texas A&M Institute of Renewable Natural Resources (IRNR) that specializes in geospatial applications that support natural resource restoration and management.  LIS conducts short courses in Geographic Information Systems at introductory and advanced levels.  Introductory courses are ESRI certified courses.  Courses can be taught on location or at the LIS lab located in the Centeq building in Research Park.  For more information, contact landinfo@tamu.edu

ESRI Virtual Campus

ESRI offers free online courses on GIS concepts and software techniques. Faculty, staff and students may be eligible to take these free courses. This requires an ESRI Global Account (free at webaccounts.esri.com) and the software and licensing obtained by your department from the Software Evaluation and Licensing Library (SELL). E-mail SELL for information about the software and course access code. Also, University Libraries at Texas A&M University hold many ESRI Press books and workbooks.

Review the list of available training courses (You may also browse ESRI Training listings and discuss with SELL about a course which is not listed).
