Humanities Librarian

Position Announcement

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as a Humanities Librarian. This is a tenure-track academic appointment, carrying full faculty status and responsibilities including librarianship, scholarship and professional service to meet both the Libraries’ and University’s requirements for promotion and tenure.

Reporting to the Dean of Libraries through the Director of Evans Subject Specialists, the Humanities Librarian advances teaching, learning, and access to information resources to students and faculty within the Department of English and its affiliated Centers and Initiatives. The position may include responsibility for additional subject areas serving the Liberal Arts community as needed.

In addition to providing targeted services to the English department through instruction and specialized research consultations in support of the entire research lifecycle, the Humanities Librarian will participate in Libraries-wide outreach, information literacy and scholarly communication initiatives, as well as general reference to the A&M user-community. Duties also include collection assessment, creation and maintenance of subject-focused LibGuides, and development of services in support of departmental research and curricular programs.

The Humanities Librarian will support and promote the Libraries’ and Texas A&M University’s shared vision and values, engage in professional service and research activities at a level consistent with rank and progress toward promotion and tenure, and perform other duties as assigned. To be considered for a tenure track title of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor, candidates must engage in an ongoing body of scholarship evidenced by publications in high quality, peer reviewed journals or other significant venues, and an engaged record of service at a national level. The successful tenure track candidate must be willing to go through a complete review process for tenure on arrival, including letters from external reviewers and a faculty vote

Required Qualifications:

  • American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master’s degree (or international equivalent)
  • Degree or significant coursework in English; or professional experience working with English department students and faculty in a research library setting
  • Demonstrated awareness of faculty and graduate student needs at a research institution
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and productively across different groups/units/teams
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and lead projects
  • Demonstrated commitment to user-centered services
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated evidence of library assessment practices
  • Knowledge of scholarly communication practices and trends within the humanities
  • Experience with instruction practices and assessment within the humanities
  • Experience with digital humanities tools and/or methodologies
  • Experience providing in-depth research consultations in the humanities
  • Experience with information resources related to women’s and gender studies, transnational studies, early modern studies, Classics, Latino studies, creative writing, and/or science fiction

Currently the staffing includes 268 individuals which includes 90 librarians holding faculty status.

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $50,500 Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax. Funding is available for professional travel and development activities.
