ONLINE MAGAZINE INDEXES

America:  History and Life.  Indexes scholarly historical journals [secondary sources] from 1954 onward.  When doing an “advanced search,” you can limit your results to articles about a particular decade (the 1820s or the 1960s, for example).

Periodical Contents Index (PCI).  Indexes selected scholarly journals, from 1665 to 1995.

NEWSPAPERS

Early American Newspapers.  This reproduces and indexes over 700 U.S. newspapers covering 1690 to 1922.  Search for keywords, or search for: daughters OR lady [as headlines] and limit your search by date.

The Virginia Gazette newspaper and index are also available online.
Click on “search the digital archive.”  To search, click on the magnifying glass. Put words in quotes “tea party” or else separate them with NEAR (women NEAR tea).  Scroll through results until you see entries that say Virginia Gazette.  Click on the one you want to view.  RIGHT click on the image to bring up a button that lets you enlarge the image. To print, save that image.  Then, either (1) insert the image as a picture into a Word document and crop the margins, or (2) open the file with a graphics program such as Paintshop Pro.  Select the part of the page to print, cropping the image as needed.  Resize the image if necessary to fit on one page, but it is better to print the article in sections rather than changing the size too much.
