The Cushing Collections
Monographs
The monograph collection ranges from Shelley's
Frankenstein and Wells's
Time Machine to current imprints, including both hardbound and paper
editions. The strength of the collection is in the period from 1970 to
the present, but significant holdings for the pre-1970 period exist.
Collection building currently focuses on the pre-1950 period. In
addition to fiction, the collection has substantial holdings of history and
criticism, reference books, film criticism, and other related
material. The monographs in the Science Fiction and Fantasy
Research Collection may be searched online from Libcat.

Periodicals
The periodicals collection is a major strength of the Science Fiction and
Fantasy Research Collection. The collection contains over ninety
percent of the American science fiction pulp magazines published prior to
1980, and strong holdings from 1980 to the present. Active
subscriptions are maintained for a growing number of titles. The
fiction magazines are supplemented by runs of most of the critical magazines
devoted to science fiction and fantasy, including the major American and
British titles, and a virtually complete run of Quarber Merkur from
Germany. The periodicals in the Science Fiction and Fantasy

Highlights
of the Periodicals Collection
Beginning
in 1923, the collection contains the very rare first issue of Weird Tales, dated
March, 1923 in its virtually complete run of that important title. Weird
Tales, curiously first published by Rural Publishing Corporation, was not
strictly a science fiction or fantasy title.
The collection also contains a virtually complete
run of Amazing Stories begun in 1926 including the very rare April, 1926
first issue . Amazing Stories heralds the beginning of science fiction as
a recognizable entity. Hugo
Gernsback, named by some as the father of science fiction, actually performed
the more motherly service by giving birth to Amazing Stories in 1926, Amazing
Stories Quarterly in 1928, Air Wonder Stories, Wonder Stories Quarterly, and
Wonder Stories (all from 1929). Wonder Stories is probably best
remembered as Thrilling Wonder Stories. The collection has complete runs
of these titles as well. The collection's complete run of Astounding Science
Fiction/Analog serves as an anchor to the whole collection. Other
titles give breadth and depth to the collection: Miracle Science and
Fantasy Stories, Strange Tales of Mystery and Terror, Marvel
Tales, Scoops (1934), Fanciful Tales of Time and Space (1936),
Fantasy and Marvel Science Fiction (1938), Dynamic Science
Stories, Famous Fantastic Mysteries, Fantastic Adventures, Planet Stories,
Science Fiction, Science Fiction Stories, Captain Future, Comet
Stories, Fantastic Novels Magazine, Science Fiction Quarterly, and Super
Science Stories give a sampling of the early titles available. The
magazine collection has an international flavor, with such titles as New
Worlds, Australian
SF News, Ad Astra,
Robot from
Italy, Nueva Dimension (Spain), Utopia, Andromeda and SF Times
(Germany), and Fiction and
Galaxie (France).
Quantitative
Capsule - approximately 10,000 periodical issues, some duplicated in
microforms.
Over 500 titles are represented in the
collection, with most of the classic fiction titles held in complete runs.
Manuscripts
The Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection houses the papers and
manuscripts of Chad Oliver and Michael Moorcock, and is a depository for the
books and papers of George R. R. Martin. In addition, there are
materials from Robert
Silverberg, Howard Waldrop, Isaac Asimov,
and Avram Davidson.
The book and article collections from which the Science Fiction and Fantasy
Research Database was developed are also housed in the manuscript

The Evans Library Collections
Monographs
The Evans Library general collection houses just over
5,000 titles in science fiction and fantasy. Most are duplicates of the
material in the Science Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection in Cushing, but
some ten percent are uniquely held in Evans. A strong holding in history
and criticism titles is the strength of the Evans segment of the overall Science
Fiction and Fantasy Research Collection. Both fiction and nonfiction are
actively acquired for the general collection.
Magazines
The Evans Library general collection maintains
subscriptions to a variety of magazines of interest to the science fiction and
fantasy scholar, including Analog, Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine; F&SF,
Locus, Cinefantastique and other titles. The microform collection houses
all science fiction titles available for purchase in the mid-1980s, and a
selection of fanzines on microfiche. Inventories of the microform
magazines are planned.
Motion Pictures and Television
The Educational Media Services unit of the Evans
Library houses a growing collection of science fiction and fantasy films and
television episodes. The collection currently stands at 120 titles, not
including 51 horror films, and is actively growing. Holdings of the
