Library spaces and services receive makeover

The Sterling C. Evans Library is getting a new look and feel, thanks to a yearlong initiative, Reimagine the Library.

“Even libraries need a makeover," Dennis Clark, head of Public and Research Services, said. "We listened to our users, began streamlining library services and creating more inviting study spaces at the Evans Library. When faculty and students return this fall, they will notice the changes.”

The first floor reference space in Evans Library has been transformed into a reading room. Most of the reference collection has been moved upstairs and is available for checkout. The reading room has been temporarily refurbished with furnishings from the Memorial Student Center (MSC) Flag Room. Plans call for new permanent furnishings in the spring as part of the redesign.

To provide users with one-stop service, the reference and checkout desks have been combined. The “full-service” desk is located at the front of the Evans lobby. Users can get assistance in a number of areas immediately upon entering the building.

Other familiar and heavily used service points have been combined elsewhere. Education Media Services (EdMS) and Course Reserves have merged to become Media and Reserves. The newly formed unit is located in the previous EdMS space on the 4th floor of the Library Annex. Phone numbers and email addresses will remain the same, and unit hours will be extended to match the current Course Reserves hours.

With the new online Course Reserves system, faculty can set up course reserves for classes and help students save on the cost of textbooks. Library staff will pull books and scan chapters to make the selected material available online. Media and Reserves staff will also load library-owned audio and visual materials for students to view or listen to assigned materials. For assistance, faculty can contact Linda Bair at 979-845-2316 or l-bair@tamu.edu.

As part of the continuing effort to expand study spaces and study hours, Library Annex 5th and 6th floors will be open 24/5 at the beginning of the fall semester, in tandem with other parts of the Annex.

The University Libraries’ popular service for interlibrary loan and document delivery, deliverEdocs, has a new name, Get it for me, and a new look. Users will need to re-register with their University NetID, but will still have access to their old records. Faculty will now have the option of receiving print materials via campus mail or at library checkout desks.
