Frequently Asked Questions:

What type of positions do you have in the Libraries?  Do I need any special skills?

The Libraries have two types of positions available, faculty and non-faculty.

Faculty – Most faculty positions require an accredited Master of Library and Information Science, however lecturer positions (mostly part-time) do not require a Master of Library and Information Science, but a second masters degree is required.

Non-faculty – There are three types of non-faculty positions.

1.  Library Career Ladder positons.

Each level is assigned duties which are characterized by progressive responsibility and complexity, from basic and routine functions requiring little knowledge of a library to the most complex and expert functions which require significant knowledge of a library and how individual units interact, positions in the highest classification will typically be responsible for an individual unit or function within the libraries.

Library Specialist I – entry level
Library Specialist II

Library Specialist III

Library Associate I

Library Associate II (exempt)

The Libraries career ladder path includes advancement through the first three levels provided an employee meets specific requirements.  To advance to the Library Associate I & II levels, there must be a vacancy and only internal employees can apply.

2.      Business & Office and Administrative Career Path Positions:

These positions, though not Career Ladder based, provide employees a clear path for progression and advancement.

3.      Professional Positions

Professional titles (such as technical, computing, administrative and accounting related work) are exempt positions that may require a bachelor’s degree in a specific field or at the minimum of a high school degree or equivalent work experience.

How do I apply for a position at TAMU Libraries?

Faculty positions.  Each position announcement gives detailed instructions on applying.

Non-Faculty positions.  Complete the on-line application at http://tamujobs.tamu.edu on any computer with WEB access.  If referred, the application document will be immediately viewable by the hiring manager.  You may attach an electronic resume or cover letter as you apply for each position.

Can I apply directly with the hiring department?

Faculty positions,  apply through the Director of Personnel for the Libraries.

Non-faculty positions, apply through the University's Employment Office, the central intake point for all non-faculty vacancies.  Only applications applying through the Employment Office can be considered.

How soon will I hear something?

Faculty positions - The  Director of Personnel will notify applicants of receipt of their application within 5 business days.

Non-Faculty - During the application process, applicants will have an opportunity to answer job-related questions.  Applicants will know immediately if they have been referred to the hiring department for evaluation.  Hiring departments will contact applicants they wish to interview.

How long can I use my application to apply to vacancies?

Applications remain on file as long as you are actively applying for positions.  If you do not apply for any positions for a full year, you will have to reenter your application before you can apply again.  Applications can be updated at any time.
