With over 3 million volumes, the University Libraries ranks among the top 40 libraries recognized by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) for collection development, improved overall ranking, and growth. It
has distinguished or ranked collections in the following areas, based upon the North American Title Count:

  • Transportation—top 3
  • Engineering and technology—top 5 in North America, top 10 in the world
  • Naval science—top 5
  • Oceanography and hydrology—top 5
  • Military science—top 10
  • Science—top 10 percent
  • State and local history, regional collection on the South and the West—top 10 percent
  • American history—top 25 percent
  • Architecture—top 3rd
  • Nautical archaeology—internationally recognized
