Diversity

Promoting diversity has been part of the mission of the Texas A&M University Libraries for many years. In February 2002, the Dean of the University Libraries established a diversity program as a component of the Public Relations Office. The Diversity Program Coordinating Committee develops guidelines for programs and identifies related programs on campus. Programs are scheduled and coordinated through the Public Relations Office.

Mission

The program educates staff about diversity issues and encourages positive change in the library environment. Through a variety of programs, the University Libraries seeks to:

  • Implement the University’s diversity initiative in the libraries and on campus.
  • Recognize, respect, and promote each individual’s uniqueness.
  • Promote diversity and cultural awareness through enhanced communication and respect for people of various backgrounds.

Goals

Through its diversity program, the University Libraries aims to meet the following goals:

Communicate:
  • By promoting and recognizing diversity among staff, students, and patrons within the University Libraries.
  • By eliminating fear based on differences.
  • By encouraging openness and cooperation among the diverse staff of the libraries and the campus community.
Educate:
  • By opening avenues of communication and interaction among library staff and the campus community.
  • By discouraging the stereotype that differences among people are negative.
  • By fostering an atmosphere that is nonthreatening and open to change while offering people the opportunity to experience diversity.
  • By providing programs that encourage library employees to discuss and value their differences.
  • By preparing library staff to work with an increasingly diverse and global population.
Celebrate:
  • By sponsoring events at which individuals throughout campus can share their culture and foster a sense of community.

Benefits

Diversity works to:

  • Improve faculty recruitment and retention
  • Increase faculty’s ability to interact with different groups of users
  • Increase staff morale and decrease absenteeism
  • Develop the talents of all TAMU Libraries employees
