What is an Online Library Catalog?

Online catalogs contain records for items held by the library and include books, journals, newspapers, serials, computer files, conference proceedings, microtext formats, government documents, maps, and audio-visual materials. They also includes many records for electronic resources licensed for access by one or more of the libraries. Records can be accessed through simple or complex title, author, or topic-based search strategies and may be limited by dates or specific locations. In addition to allowing users to type in simple and complex searches to find materials in the library, the catalogs may offer user customized features that enable users can check their current record of items they have checked out, initiate real-time renewal or recall requests, save frequently-used search histories, and create a bookbag of titles they wish to remember.
