Associate Dean and Director, Medical Sciences Library

General Description:

Under the direction of the Dean of Libraries, the Associate Dean and Director of the Medical Sciences Library is part of the Libraries Executive Team and is responsible for all aspects of the Medical Sciences Library. Key responsibilities include engaging in shared Libraries governance and Medical Sciences Library strategic development, budget management, and operational areas.

General Duties:

  • Provides leadership and oversight of the Medical Sciences Library. This includes resource development, client services, outreach, and facilities oversight.  Regularly advises and informs the Dean of concerns, new strategies, opportunities, etc.
  • Engages in support for campus-wide biomedical information needs
  • Direct supervision of all faculty and staff assigned to the Medical Sciences Library.
  • Develops networks and collaborative relationships with the various colleges actively engaged in animal and human health initiatives. This currently includes College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Department of Health and Kinesiology, and the Health Sciences Center, which includes the College of Medicine, College of Nursing, Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, College of Dentistry, Institute for Biomedical Sciences, and School of Public Health.
  • Engages in budget development and negotiation with supported Colleges, particularly those associated with the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and for which the Medical Sciences Library provides clinical support.
  • Actively engages in state and regional consortiums in providing services and collaborative collection development.
  • Coordinates and works with the following offices and administrative units in the University Libraries:
    • Preservation unit for conservation and preservation strategies and needs;
    • Employee Resources and Business Services for budget administration and expenditures; hiring, and personnel management.
    • Marketing/Communications unit for special events, advertising, and signage
    • Facilities Services for building concerns and issues
  • Participates as a member of the University Libraries Executive Team; occasionally represents Dean on campus as requested.
  • Pursues an active and ongoing program of professional development, research, and service as appropriate to academic rank and/or tenured status.
