More Information

The number of women veterans in the United States is over 2 million, and it’s projected to steadily increase.[1] Texas has the largest share of women veterans in the nation, with over 177,000 women veterans in 2014.[2]  Women veterans tend to be more likely to pursue higher education than their non-veteran counterparts,[3] and women veterans are heavy users of veterans educational benefits,[4] but the number of women veterans enrolled in studies at Texas A&M is low.  In order to effectively engage the women veterans currently studying at Texas A&M and improve recruitment of women veterans to the campus, the Veteran Resource and Support Center, with the support of other campus entities, should develop programming and outreach to specifically target women veterans as a unique subpopulation within the larger veteran community.  Such outreach should acknowledge the unique background and experiences of women veterans and explicitly welcome them and recognize their contributions in the military and to the campus and the broader community.
