The Laughlin collection includes printed matter, manuscripts, and artifacts documenting the production and reception of “the book” (broadly defined). The oldest artifacts in Cushing Library are housed within the Laughlin collection, as are all but one of our incunabula. Some of the Library’s most remarkable items (the Gutenberg leaf, the Flemish Book of Hours, the early examples of Asian printing, the Babylonian clay cone, the collection of fore-edge bindings) are present here. While the collection was initially conceived around the notion of “Antiquarian Books,” several decades of collecting in support of evolving teaching practices has also see the inclusion of items like empty bindings, early e-readers, printers’ ephemera, as well as a modest collection of reference books related to the collection’s scope.

Since the Laughlin collection has emerged as a particularly useful one to draw upon for instruction, items which support the teaching mission of Cushing Library as it relates to the history of the book are actively sought for the collection.
