Health and Life Sciences Librarian

Position Announcement

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks a creative and dynamic professional to join the Texas A&M University Libraries as the Health and Life Sciences Librarian. This is an academic appointment carrying full faculty status and responsibilities for scholarly activities and/or professional service to meet both the Libraries'; and the University's requirements for promotion. The appointment may be as a tenure-track/tenured position or a clinical (non-tenure track) position, depending on the successful candidate's professional interest, scholarship engagement, and professional service.

Under the guidance of the Medical Sciences Library Deputy Director, this position provides liaison services to the students, researchers and faculty of Texas A&M University with an emphasis on the life and health sciences programs. Responsibilities include developing and delivering instructional programs, working with faculty to plan and develop curriculum-integrated content, providing reference and research support, and participating in collection development for designated collection areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master's degree (or international equivalent)
  • Demonstrated interest in providing online and classroom instruction
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service
  • Library experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a health sciences library setting
  • Public services experience in a health science environment
  • Experience using health/life sciences resources
  • Experience designing and delivering instructional programs
  • Collection development experience
  • Knowledge of web content management systems
  • Knowledge of technologies for instruction and collaboration
  • Knowledge of evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of scholarly communications and faculty metrics
  • Evidence of effective collaboration and teamwork
  • Membership in the Academy of Health Information Professionals

The Libraries:

In an effort to provide relevant customer service in an ever-changing environment, the Texas A&M University Libraries is developing a core culture representing flexibility, innovation and risk-taking.  In addition, the Libraries recognize the value in creating a culture that draws from the richness and strength reflected in the diversity of our state and our nation and has created an actionable Diversity Plan.

The Libraries currently rank 8th in materials expenditures ($23.6 million) and 4th in ongoing expenditures ($16.6 million) among all ARL libraries. Additionally, the Libraries typically rank near the top 10 for starting librarian salaries among ARL U.S. Public Academic Libraries. Currently the staffing includes 268 individuals which includes 90 librarians holding faculty status.

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience; minimum starting salary will be $50,500. Excellent benefits include health plan and paid life insurance; several retirement plans including TIAA; paid holidays and vacation; no state or local income tax. Funding is available for professional travel and development activities.
