Tips and Strategies for Librarian Applicants

When the Search Committee reviews applications for positions, the information provided is scored against a rubric that is built off of the position announcement. The top candidates will be selected for Zoom interviews . The successful candidate may be invited for an onsite visit of the library and the campus prior to job offer.

Here are a few tips to follow in preparing your application materials:

  • Read the Position Announcement carefully in Workday and make sure you meet the Required Qualifications.
  • Customize your application letter to the specific position and explain to us how your qualifications match those sought in the position announcement. A typical cover letter for an entry level position is 1½ to 2 pages single spaced in length. Certain positions requiring different experience levels could vary in length.
    • We encourage you to include information such as accomplishments or activities that are related to the qualifications for the position.
    • Tell us about your interpersonal skills or work style. Enthusiastic, supportive of diversity, dynamic, creative, customer-service oriented are but a few examples of characteristics we are seeking.
  • Provide us with a cover letter and Curriculum Vita (CV), not a business-style resume. This means include all experience or activities that provide relevant information about your qualifications for the position or what you can bring to it. There are no page limits on a CV, but make sure what you include is relevant to the position.
  • Friendly reminder to double check your materials for grammar and spelling before your final submission.
