Evans Library Collection Relocation FAQs

Collection Relocation FAQ

The extensive electronic and print catalog of Texas A&M University Libraries is centered on a user-driven acquisitions policy focused on meeting the needs of students, faculty and staff.

WHY

Why are books and other materials in Evans Library being relocated?

Select materials are being relocated to:

  1. Make high-use items easier to find.
  2. Reorganize space to meet the evolving needs of students and faculty.
  3. Maximize dedicated, flexible space for student learning and study.

WHAT

What materials are being relocated?

Low-use items and items in need of special care.

What are the selection criteria for collections being relocated?

All collections are examined according to the following criteria:

  • Usage/Availability Statistics | This data includes publication/purchase date, the number of times a book has been checked out, when it was last checked out, as well as its availability through interlibrary loan from libraries worldwide.
  • Condition | If an item is in poor condition, the Libraries decide whether to preserve the item, purchase a new copy, or withdraw it.
  • Duplicates | The Libraries are withdrawing duplicate copies from the stacks, except items for course reserves.

Cushing Memorial Library & Archives curators and archivists are also identifying rare and unique items that align with their collections and may be transferred to Cushing.

WHERE

Where are books, music, videos, journals and other items being relocated?

Some items are staying where they are, some items are being moved to another floor at Evans, some are going to another Texas A&M University Library, and some are moving to remote storage facilities like the Joint Library Facility (JLF) at the RELLIS campus. JLF is a high-density storage solution for low-use library materials that Texas A&M University shares with libraries across Texas.

HOW

How do I request relocated materials that I need?

All relocated materials, regardless of location, can be searched for and retrieved using the Libraries search tool. Still can’t find what you need? Use the Get It For Me service to access the interlibrary loan service that partners with libraries across the world.
