The Studio Powers Audio and Visual Creativity

Seeking a quiet place to record audio? Visit The Studio’s Whisper Rooms. How about editing software? The Studio has a media lab. Want to convert an old videotape to a digital file? The Studio can help with that, too. And more.

Established in 2017, The Studio resides on the sixth floor of the Sterling C. Evans Annex. Extensive research and thought went into designing the facility. Its services have expanded to stay relevant to technological and higher education curricula changes.

An increasing number of faculty are assigning coursework that includes video and audio components. The Studio has the technology and staff expertise to help students produce their best work.

“The doors are open,” said Bob Perez, program coordinator of The Studio. “If someone doesn’t know how to do any type of video editing or has questions about how they can go about doing something, we're here to help.”

One highlight, among many, is the Whisper Rooms — facilities with professional audio equipment and sound reduction insulation that significantly reduces ambient noise. They are regularly occupied with students, faculty and staff who need to focus fully on their audio projects without the risk of external sound creeping in.

“The Studio provides a solution for students who can’t record something because of trains and car honks,” Perez said. “Those who are on the first floor of a building and can’t record because people keep walking by can come here to record a really nice audio project.”

Trombone performances, sports podcasts, multimedia scholarship applications and faculty lessons have all been recorded in Whisper Rooms.

The Studio's popularity is growing, as users booked 3,217 hours in 2023-24, an increase of 15% from the previous school year. Walk-ins are welcome, but reservations are encouraged to ensure access to the One Button Studio and the Whisper Rooms.

“We incorporated the Whisper Rooms, One Button Studios and our Light Board, all into one thing where it allows the students to be very creative when they're trying to create a project,” Perez said. “It could be audio, video, photography, anything like that.”
