Mitchell Exhibit on Boxing and Literature Opens Feb. 12

An exhibit featuring 20th century English literature and the art of boxing will open with a reception at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 at Texas A&M University’s Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. “Hand to Hand: Selections from the J. Lawrence Mitchell Collections,” will showcase items related to 20th century English writers, dictionaries, philology, and pugilism from two of Cushing Library’s major collections.

Nicholas Basbanes, author of nine works on cultural history and noted authority on book history and culture, will be guest speaker at the reception. His first book, A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books, was a finalist in 1995 for the National Book Critics Circle Award for nonfiction, and was named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. His most recent book, On Paper: The Everything of Its Two Thousand Year History, was selected as one of three finalists for the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Nonfiction for 2014.

The exhibit which runs through Dec. 11 pays tribute to collector, scholar and bibliophile Dr. J. Lawrence “Larry” Mitchell, retired associate dean and director of Cushing Memorial Library and Archives and former head of the English Department at Texas A&M.

The exhibit is sponsored by The John H. Hinton Library Endowment and The Priscilla Letterman Meserole Endowment. The community is invited to the opening reception.
