Course About Plants Grows in the Libraries' Studio

Choosing to skip the beach, or a staycation, Dr. Lorenzo Rossi, assistant professor of horticultural sciences, spent hours of his summer in front of a green screen in the Libraries’ One Button Studio, where users with limited to no production experience create high-quality, polished video projects every day.
As a new professor at Texas A&M stepping into a horticulture class with 50+ years of history, Rossi excitedly worked to create new high-tech learning opportunities for students. The One Button Studio on the 6th floor of Evans Library Annex provided a user-friendly environment for Rossi to create state-of-the-art virtual horticulture experiences.
“We are making horticulture more accessible not only to in-person students, but to the online students,” Rossi said.
Rossi added an online section to a core course about the structure, growth and development of horticultural plants — which led to 100 additional students in the course.
The studio Rossi spent hours in is open to all students, faculty and staff. Within a larger studio space equipped for recording audio, digital conversion, and computers loaded with design software, there are two One Button Studios featuring cameras that start and stop at the push of a button. Various backdrops, including a green screen, are available.
Most importantly, the Libraries’ Studio has experts available to assist with equipment and software, which is why Rossi chose it as the location for recording the new online version of his course.
“Every time we had a minimal problem there were two student workers that were always available,” Rossi said. “The only thing for me was to get in there, put on the PowerPoint, and everything was ready for me. If you record at the Studio, you have people who know more than you and they will assist you.”
