Something to Yell About

By Richard Nira, Communications Coordinator
yell bookBooklets in Cushing’s Yell Book collection include some of the earliest versions of Aggie yells.

The "Something to Yell About: Yell Book Digitization Project" and the resulting keepsake booklets include yells and songs reflecting the unique experience of cadets from 1904-1932.

The project was generously funded in honor of 2022-23 Friends of the Texas A&M University Libraries President Cindy Craigen '88 by her husband Taylor Craigen '92.

Throughout her tenure on the Friends of the Libraries Board of Directors, Cindy has been an advocate and avid supporter of the staff and students employed at the Libraries and has recognized their impact on academic success. This gift supported the work of the Libraries' student technician Aileen Gonzalez '24 an anthropology major who completed the digitization and preservation of this historic collection.

Preserving the history of Aggie traditions is important to the Craigens. Digitizing this collection protects these treasures for future generations. The collection covers the university's past and the integral role the Bryan-College Station community has played in supporting and helping shape the university.

Included in the keepsake booklet are some of the earliest iterations of Texas A&M's current yells. It also included ads from businesses at the time that helped finance the initial Yell Book printings. The keepsake cover is a replica of the 1904-05 Yell Book, the earliest in the University Archives, which belonged to Dan Culver, Class of 1908. The archives also hold a small collection of Culver's writings.

The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas Yell Book Collection is part of the University Archives and is housed in the Cushing Memorial Library & Archives at Texas A&M.
