The extraordinary range of work by a prolific, influential artist and maps that included real-time observations of American troops fighting in World War II were just two highlights from an exciting, informative year of exhibitions at the Cushing Memorial Library & Archives.
The Ubiquitous Edward Gorey
One exhibition, “The Ubiquitous Edward Gorey,” featured more than 600 items, including books from Cushing’s extensive Gorey holdings and biographic materials, personal items and examples of Gorey’s creative output from the Miller Family Edward Gorey Collection. On view were largely unknown drawings and paintings from Gorey’s youth, first editions of his early primary books and other rare materials.
Mapping Victory: WWII U.S. Service Unit Maps
In “Mapping Victory: WWII U.S. Service Unit Maps,” troops in Europe and the Pacific recorded their victories, mundane activities, tragedies and other events large and small. Some maps are straightforward renditions of troop movements, while others include collective memories through handwritten notes and illustrations.
Student-Led Exhibits
Other exhibits from Cushing collections featured Texas A&M historical items, works by Jane Austen and books that have maintained their importance years after their original publication. These exhibits were curated by students as part of class assignments.
