Beyond the Comma: Student Preps for Post-Grad Dreams in the Libraries

Sterling C. Evans Library was home for Josh Schultz ’25. It’s the place he relied on. The place where he came to work and came to study on his way to earning a degree in 2025.

He helped fellow students find their words, both written and spoken, in Evans Library. As a student worker at the Texas A&M University Writing Center, one of the Libraries’ academic partners, Schultz supported students in every step of the creative process. He helped them through their most challenging dissertations, interviews, presentations, essays and more.

Housed on the second floor of  Evans, the Writing Center is one of several academic services that University Libraries work alongside to support students.

On average, the center conducts over 9,000 peer-to-peer consultations a year. For three years, Schultz was part of the writing team, which inspired his decision to study psychology.

“I realized that I enjoy working with and helping people,” Schultz said.

For both work and academics, Schultz spent quite a bit of time in the library.

“It’s a very comfortable environment,” he said. “Especially running into people that you like and then having a really good conversation … it’s my favorite space to catch up with people.”

As Schultz begins the next phase of his life in the clinical psychology Ph.D. program at Northern Illinois University, he advises the next class of Texas A&M University students to take advantage of campus resources.

“There’s so much you can get out of the services all across campus,” Schultz said. “Not just the Writing Center. My advice would definitely be using those services, the career center, the library, University Health Services, and others. Use what’s available to you to feel like you are accepted more on the campus and belong.”
